Crayon & Watercolour work together at McConaghy Oct 20, 2018

Make your lively vibrant works even livelier.

Mix it up with watercolour + coloured pencil at the McConaghy Centre in Richmond Hill October 20, 2018 in a full day workshop that explores Pencil Crayon and Watercolour working together to make even more lively vibrant images. This one day workshop will give you everything you need to make these two mediums work together to create lively images without a lot of hard boring work.

Transparent watercolour forms the under colour glaze as the pencil crayon makes combinations unavailable in either medium on its own.

Coloured pencils have been around for a lifetime. The possibilities are endless with this simple portable medium. No water. No muck. No huge bag of stuff to lug around. Just Paper, or another dry surface and the pencils. They never wear out. Never dry out. Never get stale. Some of us have coloured pencils from our childhood carefully saved in their special pencil case, complete with memories of creating an imaginary world of...? Newly rediscovered colouring books have given permission to indulge in the joy of working with our pencil case again. BUT, when the colouring book is done, or we seek greater challenges, what to do?

Participants feedback " 'I really enjoyed the class. Now I want to draw and colour too.' 'Not enough hours in the day.' ' Thank you Nola, ... the fantastic class yesterday !' 'You have different techniques ... that has encouraged me to keep drawing.
Please keep up the great work and encouragement, ...everyone can draw!' 'I wondered why you were giving us these little scraps of paper. Now I know why. I learned, a lot. Thank You'"

A mare and foal repeated the spring time  theme, this time trotting  and cantering across the page. After spirited bidding this work went to a happy collector in Toronto.

Nola's second work for the auction was a custom portrait. Sized at a 1/4 sheet to fit anywhere, subject(s) of the purchaser's choice. The more the bid the more choice the buyer received, up to two subjects and possibly up to a full sheet size.

A happy family from Kapuskasing will receive their portrait of "Isabelle & Buckthorn" later this summer

"Seeing the Line" is the reward for a PhD. This is a detail of a full sheet, 22" x 30". The reference was old, faded and much more complex, a background of Palgrave, wraps, boots, breastplate and running martingale, jacket and glove just a silhouette.

Just Horses, at the CNE Horse Palace

This winter a group of artists had access to a special figure drawing studio, 12 weeks of drawing horses & riders from life courtesy of Toronto Police Service's Mounted Unit.

Drawing is easy, make a mark on a surface. Make those easy marks with simple tools; paper & pencil, later water soluble graphite, makers etc. Make them on paper,  from live models. Make a final satisfying picture. It's challenging and fun since horses do not do 20 minute sustained poses. Horses + Riders, even less so. However poses repeat and repeat as Toronto's Mounted Unit goes through its training paces while moving in all directions.

Thank you Toronto Police Services Mounted Unit.

Beginners to advanced, every level of experience is welcome.
